SACRAMENTO (AP) — A bill headed to the governor’s desk will allow voters to find out if their mail-in ballots are actually counted.

SB589 by Democratic state Sen. Jerry Hill of San Mateo would require county officials to establish a system allowing vote-by-mail voters to learn if their ballot was counted and, if it was not, why that is.

Democratic Assemblyman Kevin Mullin of San Mateo told his colleagues that the bill he co-sponsored would require registrars to notify voters “so they can address the problem” in future elections.

About half those who voted in California’s 2012 general election, 6.7 million people, did so by mail.

SB589 received unanimous support in the Assembly on Monday and will be sent to Gov. Jerry Brown.
